Who Funds Us

In 2007:

• 17% came from individual donations
• less than 1% came from corporations
• 81% came from foundations
• 0% came from unions
• 2% came from sales, such as speaking fees, fees for articles, and publication sales.

Our single largest contribution from an individual – $1,000 – was made by a donor from a town in Quebec.

Our single largest contribution from a foundation – $205,000 – came from the Open Society Institute for our Three Gorges work.

In calculating the support that our foundation receives, we include the value of contributed services. Over the years, these have included pro bono work by lawyers and other professionals, free rent supplied by the University of Toronto, and other material contributions that have helped us to carry out our work.
