REDD is carbon market-based mechanism to prevent the logging of forests and replace the income from the logging with an income from the earning of carbon credits. Residents, businesses and governments can earn carbon credits if they promise to protect forests and the carbon emissions that are released during logging and other degradation activities. REDD programs are not formally approved by the UN. Recently, a number of REDD projects have caused outrage, as critics contend that local residents have been swindled.
